Assistant Professor, Interdisciplinary Studies

Athabasca University’s Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, Interdisciplinary Studies, commencing July 1, 2018. This is a full-time position located in Alberta. Athabasca University is a fully-accredited, comprehensive academic and research post-secondary institution with a commitment to facilitating open access to education. 

 The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies. PhDs in other disciplines will also be considered provided that the candidate has a demonstrated ability to work across disciplines as an interdisciplinary scholar. Applications are encouraged from those whose scholarship critically addresses, and with an active scholarly research program in, one or more of the following areas – Community Studies; Indigenous studies; Canadian, Northern and/or Global Studies; Environmental Studies. The candidate will be expected to develop new courses as determined by the requirements of program development and their research interests, as well as teach and revise existing graduate courses in one or more of these areas. The candidate will also be expected to coordinate, teach and revise existing undergraduate courses in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Evidence of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level is required, and commitment to exploring and advancing the use of contemporary digital technologies in teaching and learning at a distance is preferred. As the candidate will teach and coordinate courses in the Master of Arts – Integrated Studies program, experience teaching and advising professional working students and graduate students would also be considered assets. All faculty members are expected to participate in administrative committees, including those pertaining to centre, faculty, or university-wide endeavors. Additionally, members are expected to participate in service to the greater external community.

Research Associate (Fixed Term): University of Cambridge, Centre of Islamic Studies

The University of Cambridge is seeking to appoint up to two Research and Outreach Associates in the Centre of Islamic Studies, to begin in September 2018. The posts are two-year, fixed-term positions.

The successful candidates will each design and conduct independent and original research into themes relating to Islam in the global age. Proposals relating to Islam or Muslim life in Europe and the United Kingdom are particularly welcome. The post-holders will support and maintain the University's national and international reputation for excellence in research and public engagement. They will carry out research at a similar level to that undertaken by lecturing staff; this will provide substantial scope for academic judgement, originality, interpretation and presentation of results.

University of Groningen: Assistant Professor Sociology of Religion 

The Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies, University of Groningen, seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor (UD) in the field of Sociology of Religion (fulltime). The position will involve 50% teaching, 40% research, and 10% administration. The position will be located within the Department of Comparative Study of Religion.

The candidate will contribute to the teaching programme (BA, MA, and Research Master's level) in the study of religion, with a special focus on sociological theory, as well as on quantitative and mixed methods. A future task of the candidate will be to coordinate the learning lines of method courses in the religious studies programmes. Language of instruction is English.
The candidate's area of expertise is open, but it needs to fit and complement the interdisciplinary research in the social scientific study of religion that is a characteristic of the department

The following criteria will be important in the selection process. The candidate should:

• hold a PhD degree in sociology of religion or in related disciplines in the study of religion
• have a track record of international peer-reviewed publications
• have teaching experience at university level
• be competent and have an interest in teaching and coordinating research methods courses; therefore, competence in qualitative and quantitative research is required
• be able to teach and supervise undergraduate and graduate students in quantitative research methods
• have demonstrated success or capacity for success in the acquisition of research funding
• have a demonstrable interest in interdisciplinary cooperation
• have organizational competence, entrepreneurship, and excellent communication skills.

Qualitative Social Science Research Fellow Post - Centre for Science, Knowledge and Belief in Society (CSKBS) at Newman University

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Fellow to work within the Centre for Science, Knowledge and Belief in Society (CSKBS) at Newman University. Up until September 2017 the post holder will work principally on the development of a large-scale project on ‘Establishing a framework for a multidisciplinary study of science in Muslim societies’. Beyond 2017 it is expected that the post holder will work on subsequent phase 2 grant delivery and contribute to the development of the ‘Science across diverse societies’ research theme within CSKBS

We welcome applications from experienced, enthusiastic and creative early career researchers with backgrounds in:
• science and technology studies
• Sociology of religion/sociology of Islam
• qualitative sociology
• Human Geography
• related areas of social scientific research

You will hold a relevant doctoral qualification. You will have a record of research activity commensurate with your career stage. It is essential of the post holder to have some experience working on postdoctoral qualitative research projects. Language skills in French, Arabic or Turkish are desirable but not essential. Where relevant mentoring and support will be provided.

The post is expected to start in September 2016.
